III. Harpazo Typology in Scripture

“Harpazo” is the greek word for the phrase “caught up” found in 1 Thess. 4:17 and Rev. 12:5.

Harpazo: Greek 726 found in 1 Thess. 4:17 and Rev. 12:5 in the phrase “caught up.” Meaning: to seize, catch up, snatch away, obtain by robbery (thief in the night). Suggests a taking by force, a snatching out of danger. This is not the same thing as the gentle ascension of Jesus in Acts 1:9 where he was “taken up,” which is Greek 1869 and means “to lift up, raise.”

a. Enoch (type of Church), Noah (type of Israel protected through judgment)

  • Enoch pleased God and was taken by Him (Gen. 5:24, Heb. 11:5) before the flood.
  • His great-grandson Noah faithfully obeyed God, built an ark, and was kept safely through the water. (Heb. 11:7)
  • The unrighteous perished.

b. Lot, a type of the Church; Sodom & Gomorrah, the unrighteous

  • The angels could not do anything until Lot was taken out of Sodom & Gomorrah. They literally took them by the hand and led them out of the city when Lot & his family weren’t moving fast enough! (Gen. 19:12-24, 29)
  • God destroyed S&G with brimstone and fire.
  • But his wife looked behind & became a pillar of salt…this is significant; haven’t explored this typology but something is here.

c. Joseph a type of Christ:

  • Rejected by his brothers (Jews)
  • Takes a Gentile bride before 7-year famine / she is not seen or mentioned after this
  • Reveals himself to his brothers & they were troubled in his presence. (See also Zech. 12:10) He tells them “God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.” (Gen. 45) “But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.” (Gen. 50:20-21) Joseph kept them through the famine.

d. Daniel a type of Church; Shadrach, Meshach & Abed-Nego a type of Israel; Nebuchadnezzar a type of antichrist. (See Daniel 3)

  • Daniel, ruler of the whole province of Babylon & chief of the governors and over all the wise men, was hidden or absent in the day of Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image. He is not mentioned anywhere whatsoever on this greatly auspicious day. (Dan. 2:48-Dan. 3)
  • Shadrach, Meshach & Abed-Nego refused to “take the mark,” (so to speak) and refused to worship the image. (Dan. 3) Compare Rev. 13:14-15.
  • Nebuchadnezzar cast them into the fire.
  • They were saved and protected, kept through the fire by the One who is “like the Son of God.”

IV. When is the Harpazo? Some thoughts...

I believe Jesus started opening the seals when He returned to heaven after his crucifixion. (See Rev. 5:4-7.) Everything in the first four seals, and up to the first part of the 5th seal, has already happened and is happening. I’m sure each seal can and will get worse, but the events can only change in *volume.* Deception / spirit of antichrist have existed since Jesus walked on earth. (1 John 2:18-23). People have been killing each other since the beginning. Recently a carton of eggs cost $150 in Venezuela (just one example of inflation). Death via sword, hunger and beasts has been happening. And ever since Christianity existed, there have been martyrs.

What has not yet happened at any point in the history of the Church is the last half of seal 5, on through seals 6 & 7.

“And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellow servants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.” Rev. 6:9-11

Please consider this: white robes are given to bodies. This seal starts with the crying out of the souls, and then they are given white robes and told to rest a little longer until the rest of the martyrs would be killed before God judges and avenges those who dwell on the earth.

It could be that this is the point where the dead in Christ rise and receive their immortal and incorruptible bodies. They are told to rest…Christ is our Sabbath, our rest. And at the end, at His 2nd Coming, He will return to earth to judge (Rev. 19:11-16). Until then is the “tribulation,” where many will be killed for their faith.

So this is the first part of my theory about where in the timeline the harpazo occurs. (As in all of these things I could be wrong, and I continue to study and seek the Lord on this, so please know I share this in a humble offering of what I believe about this time.) The second part of the theory is below. I’m not sure if these two seals overlap (dead in Christ rise first in seal 5, and seal 6 happens right away and we who are alive & remain are caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air). Or if seal 6 happens after both the dead & Christ and those who are alive & remain are harpazo’d.

Seal 6: there is a very intriguing parallel that can be drawn between Rev. 6:12-17 (the sixth seal) and Rev. 12. This is not without holes, but consider the following:

A portion of Revelation 12:

Rev. 12:1-5 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

6th seal, Rev. 6:12-17

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

  • So in both of these passages we have sun, moon and stars.

  • Rev. 12:1-2 moon at her feet
  • Rev. 6:12 the moon becomes “like blood.”
  • Rev. 12: The dragon is red.
  • Rev. 12: BOTH the moon AND the red dragon are at her feet...the dragon “stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.” Is it possible that something happens during this event that causes the moon to appear as blood?
  • Rev. 12: the dragon’s tail casts stars to the earth.
  • Rev. 6: stars fall to the earth.
  • In Rev. 6, heaven “departed as a scroll.”
  • In Rev. 12, the child is “caught up (harpazo) to God and to His throne.”
  • In the 6th seal, every mountain (earth) and island (sea) are moved out of their places.
  • Rev. 12:12 says, “Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you...”
  • Rev. 6:12 “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake...”
  • Rev. 12:16 “And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth…”
“For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up (harpazo) together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thess. 4:15-18

Now after the sixth, and BEFORE the seventh seal is opened, two new events happen. In Revelation 7 we see:

  1. The 144k of the children of the tribes of Israel are sealed on their foreheads
  2. A great multitude appears in heaven
Rev. 7:9-10 “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, [righteousness of Christ] and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.”
Rev. 7:13-17 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. [NOTE: this is **BEFORE** the trumpets or the bowls of wrath]. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

I believe this great multitude which no one can number of all nations, kindreds, people and tongues is the Church. This is still before the 7th seal. The seventh seal is more mysterious and I’m not exactly sure about it except that it describes a temple / altar atonement ritual that was shadowed in Lev. 16. After this, Rev. 8:6 says, “And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound."

Somewhere around the catching away of the church and / or this point is where I believe the “official” start to Daniel’s 70th week / time of Jacob’s trouble / the indignation / the day of the Lord begins.

V. What is the tribulation for?

The term “tribulation” many use for the 7 years preceding the Millennial Kingdom is not the best term. It’s more accurate to call it “Daniel’s 70th Week.” The book of Daniel says, "70 weeks are determined for YOUR PEOPLE and YOUR HOLY CITY...." (See Dan. 9:24-27; it’s specific to Israel and not to the nations or peoples of the earth.) These are prophetic weeks consisting of 7 years each. All of the other years were fulfilled to the day. The last week has been unfulfilled. This is what lies ahead. It is my humble opinion that what Jesus referred to as “great tribulation” in Matt. 24:21 is a descriptive phrase for the last half (3.5 years) of this time. Also, Jesus talked about the days being shortened for the sake of the elect (Matt. 24:22) and it’s possible that Daniel’s 70th week could be what is shortened.

This time is also referred to as “Jacob’s Trouble.” (Jer. 30:7) It is for Israel. Right now we are in the age of the Church, while blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in (Rom. 11:25). “Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.” (Micah 5:3, see also Rev. 12:1-5).

What is this time for? It is for punishment of idolatry and sin. It is for warning and punishing the rest of the unbelievers. It is for the reckoning and restoring of Israel. It is for God's wrath. The major & minor prophets explain this in great detail. While of course God does according to His wisdom and will, and I am so limited in my understanding (and am determined to know only “Christ Jesus and Him crucified” so all of the rest is secondary) I cannot find a scriptural purpose for the Church for this time which is specifically oriented around Israel. (Doesn’t mean there isn’t one, but I’ve not found it yet if there is.) We aren’t needed as witnesses. The 2 witnesses will preach for the first 3.5 years of this time (Rev. 11) and will be known / seen / heard all over the world likely due to the Internet / live camera feeds, etc. The angel will fly through the heavens proclaiming the everlasting gospel (Rev. 14:6-7). Some believe the 144,000 sealed servants / the Jewish remnant (Rev. 7 & 14) are also witnesses during this time, which may be true but I am not sure about that. I think they could be for something else.

The Church is not appointed to wrath (1 Thess. 5:9-10). As the Church, our sins have been atoned for on the cross. We will stand before the judgment seat of Christ (2 Cor. 5:10, 1 Cor. 3:9-15). We do not need to be punished for our sin....Jesus already took our punishment for us and we are justified by His blood. While God deals with His unfaithful wife (Ez. 16, Ez. 23, all of Hosea, Jer. 3) whom He divorced and will restore, on earth, the Church will be in heaven with the Lamb.

Those who will become martyrs in the time of Jacob's trouble are those who did not put their faith in Christ Jesus during the dispensation of grace (Eph. 3). God may save a remnant of tribulation saints, but many of them will be required to shed their own blood by refusing to take the mark or worship the beast or image, and therefore will be killed.

If we have not been appointed by God to die for him in this way, then we have been appointed to live for him. “For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.” Rom. 14:8

“Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” Luke 21:36

What makes us worthy to escape? “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” John 6:28-29

When we believe on Jesus we receive the free gift of eternal life. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit....“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest [down-payment] of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” Eph. 1:13-14

The harpazo is the redemption of the purchased possession!

VI. Sermon notes: The Kingdom of God vs. The Kingdom of Heaven

*Note from Hillary: these are sermon notes from a teaching by Robert Breaker that was helpful for me called the Kingdom of God vs. the Kingdom of Heaven. Please look up the references for more details. This is not exhaustive, but is a good starting point for study.

Kingdom of God: A spiritual kingdom for Jews and Gentiles, the Church

Rom. 14:17 righteousness, peace, joy in the Holy Spirit Luke 17:20-21 does not come with observation; it is within you John 3:3, 5-6 must be born of the Spirit / new birth / born from above / Eph. 1:13 Acts 20:24-25 the gospel of the grace of God is the gospel of the kingdom of God Gal. 5:21-22 those who practice the works of the flesh will not inherit the kingdom of God / fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, etc… Matt. 6:33 Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (found in Christ)

Kingdom of Heaven: a physical kingdom for the Jews / Millennial Kingdom

Matt. 10:5-7 do not go to Gentiles. KOH at hand.
Matt. 3:2 repent, KOH at hand.
John 12:13 the king of Israel (shows Jewish mindset)
Mark 11:9-10 kingdom of David (Millennial Kingdom)
Matt. 4:17 Jew preaching to Jews…KOH at hand
Matt. 5:3, 10, 19 works of law, by your own righteousness / keep commandments
Matt. 8:11 Abraham, Isaac & Jacob there

This kingdom could have been established when Jesus came the first time but was postponed because Israel rejected Him.

Matt. 23:13, 37-39

3 rejections: they rejected God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit

They rejected God: Matt. 21:23-33
They rejected Jesus: Mark 15:11-15
They rejected the Holy Spirit: Acts 7:51-60

It is my understanding from these passages & more that after this time of the Church, when God’s focus returns to Israel, it will be to pick up where was left off when Israel rejected Him 3 times. I believe they still had a chance for the KOH before the stoning of Stephen (see Luke 13:7-9) but after Stephen’s testimony and death (Acts 7:51-60) God gave them up. (Micah 5:3 / Romans 9-11). And then did God reveal his secret via Paul (Rom. 16:25-26, 1 Cor. 2:6-8, Eph. 3:1-3, and many more.)
